How to prepare for a video job interview

  • Ahead of the interview be sure to test your equipment on the software program that will be used, i.e., Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, LinkedIn, etc..
  • Practice video calls with friends if you haven’t done many recently. The cadence of a video call is quite different than phone calls or in person meetings.
  • Check your audio quality with a friend, crackling headphones and under water audio is distracting for the interviewer.
  • Do you need to blur your background or use a filter? How is the lighting?
  • Research the company website, social posts and recent press releases as well as review the interviewer’s profiles on LinkedIn.
  • Prepare a short list of questions about the company and the role.
  • If you have a trusted connection at the company, and the search is not confidential, reach out to them to ask more questions, and to let them know you are interviewing, ask about the interviewer, the team and the organization.
  • Review the job description looking for keywords and required skills and experience.
  • Reflect on your work experience looking for ways you can demonstrate your skills and success during the interview with examples, make some jot notes so you don’t forget the key points you’d like to share.
  • If you want to practice your interview skills there are several websites that allow you to upload the job description and practice.
  • Dress for success.
  • Try not to speak too quickly.
  • Smile at the camera.
  • Plan a quiet place without interruptions where pets, children and other household members can’t be seen or heard.
  • Mute your other devices.
  • Follow up afterwards with a thank you note.
