Tips and Tools for Your Job Search

Shout out to all the 2020 college and university graduates! Even if the celebrations were muted this year due to the crazy circumstances, there is no lack of recognition for all the work and effort you have put into your post-secondary years. Congratulations on your perseverance and success!!!

And now it is time to find a job. This is not much fun at the best of times, however this year we realize that it is even more of a challenge than normal. Don’t lose hope, there are jobs out there, it just may take companies a bit longer to go through the hiring process.

Reach out to us anytime for a free resume review but, in the meantime here is a bit of advice. I hope it helps.

Tips for maintaining your sanity while looking for work:

  1. Do not spend 8 hours a day looking. That will only frustrate you more. Take 2-3 hours a day, focusing 100% on the task at hand, and then move on to something else
  2. Ensure that you modify your resume for each job that you apply for. Focus on the keywords in the job description and use them in your resume
  3. Some companies ask for a cover letter. Spend time putting together a solid outline of one and then make subtle changes to it based on each job you apply for
  4. If the word “interview” gives you sweaty palms and makes you feel light-headed, stop using it! The reality is you are also evaluating the prospective employer to see if you are interested in working with them, so switch out the word ‘interview’ and replace it with ‘conversation’. You’ll be surprised how much it helps
  5. If you are lucky enough to land an interview, make sure you are prepared. Review the company’s website, know their business, understand their culture, make sure you can talk to the skills you have that match what they are looking for, and definitely have a few questions at the ready
  6. Be professional, take time on your appearance. You only get one chance to make a first impression
  7. Never ask about salary, vacation, or benefits in the first interview unless they bring it up
  8. When you have applied for a position, do not get discouraged if you do not hear back. Unfortunately, too many companies only feel it is necessary to contact you if you have made the interview list. Do not take it personally, just move on
  9. Keys to success are preparation and believing in your self-worth. Someone is going to get the job, so why shouldn’t it be you!!!

Good luck and keep moving forward. You’ve got this!
